Pedestrian accident leaves senior seriously injured

Because of their age, the reflexes of the elderly can be slower, and they may not react immediately to a dangerous situation. They are also more likely to suffer serious injuries if they are struck by a vehicle.

A pedestrian accident at a Shop Rite parking lot in Succasunna, New Jersey, left a 68-year-old man hospitalized. According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was crossing from the store to the parking lot when a 40-year-old woman driving a crossover SUV struck him. Paramedics transported the man to Morristown Medical Center with serious injuries. He remains at the hospital. The investigation is still underway and no charges against the driver have yet been filed.

A pedestrian is at a distinct disadvantage in a collision with a motor vehicle, and sometimes it can be extremely debilitating. Serious injuries come with substantial costs, including medical expenses and lost wages.

Driving is a privilege that comes with many responsibilities. A single act of negligence, such as inattention, drowsy driving, drunk driving, speeding or failure to yield can result in an accident. When drivers deliberately violate the rules of traffic safety, they may be liable for the injuries they caused.

Victims of pedestrian accidents can seek compensation by either settling with the driver or through litigation. If the victim unfortunately dies, a surviving family member may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit. However, it may be wise for any victim of a pedestrian accident to consider the help of a legal professional. An attorney can assess the extent of the negligent driver's liability and the amount of fair compensation before either entering into a settlement or filing a lawsuit.
