Speeding causes car accident, leaves four people injured

Most people know that speeding is illegal while on a public highway. Speeding is one of the most common traffic violations in New Jersey. It is also one of the most dangerous violations, since a speeding vehicle can cause so much damage if an accident occurs. A recent car accident west of Newark provides a cautionary tale.

In Readington Township, a man's speeding vehicle caused a three-car crash on a local highway. According to the police, the multi-vehicle accident happened at around mid-day when a 21-year-old man driving southbound at a very high rate of speed rear-ended a car driven by another man. The impact of the crash sent the second vehicle across the center line and into opposing traffic, where it hit a car driven by a female driver.

The driver that caused the crash suffered minor injuries. The female driver suffered severe hip pain and it was also suspected that she fractured her arm and both legs. She was transported via helicopter to a local medical center. The driver of the second vehicle and his passenger were also airlifted to the same hospital with injuries. The speeding driver was cited for unsafe lane changes and for reckless driving.

Besides citations, a negligent driver can also be held liable in civil court. New Jersey car accident victims can file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver. Injured victims often have trouble with medical expenses and other costs, such as pain and suffering and lost wages. Compensation can cover these damages. In a fatal car accident, family members can file a lawsuit on behalf of a victim.
