Parkway express lane accident kills 1 man and injures 3 others

An auto accident can happen in the blink of an eye. Even a split second can bring devastation; vehicles can collide and motorists can be killed or badly injured. For this reason, drivers in New Jersey should always practice safe driving and be mindful of their surroundings so they can both avoid being in and causing a motor vehicle accident.

Recently, on the Garden State Parkway near Tinton Falls, some 30 miles south of Newark, a freak mid-morning accident occurred that killed one man and critically injured another three men. Around 9:15 a.m., a van had pulled over on the right shoulder of the express lane to help a disabled vehicle parked on the shoulder. While the vehicles were stopped and several men were gathered to help the driver of the disabled vehicle, a second van traveling in the express lane veered across traffic and hit the door of one of the vans. It then careened into three men standing on the grass median.

The 48-year-old driver of one of the parked vans was killed. Three other men suffered serious injuries. Three passengers in one van, two of them minors, were not hurt. Two lanes of the Parkway were temporarily closed as accident investigators for the New Jersey State Police were determining what happened and who might be responsible for the accident. The parkway lanes were reopened around 3 p.m., some six hours after the accident.

Most auto accidents are caused by negligence. This means that when drivers follow safety precautions, accidents are more easily avoided. However, when a driver fails to drive safely, anyone injured or the family of anyone killed may be able to take legal action against the driver. A personal injury lawsuit can be filed by an injured victim and family members can file a lawsuit on behalf of anyone killed.
