3 injured when tractor-trailer fails to slow in Leonia

On any given highway, commuter vehicles travel alongside large commercial trucks that are transporting heavy loads over hundreds or even thousands of miles. Drivers behind the wheel of large commercial trucks are held to a higher standard of safety because of the potential dangers associated with the massive vehicles and the cargo they carry. When this higher standard is not met, too often devastating truck accidents occur.

Not long ago near Newark, a tractor-trailer slammed into a Nissan Altima that had reduced its speed to accommodate traffic flow on the New Jersey Turnpike. The impact of the collision resulted in the Altima being dragged for about half a mile. The truck and car then collided with another vehicle, and the Altima became pinned under the tractor-trailer.

At some point during this horrific chain of events, one person was thrown from the Altima and two other individuals in the car were pinned inside for two hours with serious injuries. The reason for the crash was reportedly that the truck driver failed to slow down.

Unfortunately, truck accidents such as this one are a common occurrence. According to crash reports provided to the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, large trucks accounted for 113,775 crashes in 2011. Of these, 3,661 resulted in fatalities.

Thankfully, the truck accident victims in this particular New Jersey accident survived, and they are likely entitled to compensation for their injuries. The ordeal now faced by these motorists should remind us of how important it is that commercial truck drivers adhere to higher safety standards.
