Driver that left bicyclist after fatal car accident surrenders

Many motorists in New Jersey know that reckless driving can put many lives at risk. Unfortunately, some negligent drivers involved in accidents also leave the scene, endangering the lives of their helpless victim.

An 83-year-old man is now facing several motor vehicle summonses and hit-and-run after leaving the scene of a fatal car accident that occurred last March in an area an hour south of Newark. The accident occurred when the elderly man's car rear-ended the 58-year-old bicyclist and left the scene. The bicyclist succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle turned himself into authorities. He remains free after posting a $150,000 bond. If convicted, he may be subjected to a 10-year prison term.

Other than going to their destination safely and on time, drivers should also look after the safety of other people. Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists can be difficult to spot in traffic and are more prone to serious and fatal injuries in a collision with another vehicle.

Reckless driving, such as speeding, driving under the influence, inattention and failure to yield can cause havoc and leave a victim injured or killed. Leaving the scene of a car accident is not only a serious criminal offense but also a grave behavior that puts a victim's life at risk.

Serious and fatal injuries not only come with great emotional trauma. Injuries or death caused by an accident come with financial burdens, including medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs and other costs associated with the accident.

An injured victim may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against a negligent car driver or if the victim dies, the surviving family may file a wrongful death lawsuit and claim compensation.

A legal professional can assist the victim or his or her family in establishing the negligence of the liable party. This will help them determine what options are available and the amount of compensation they could seek. This could help them heal from or cope with the accident while also alleviating them from financial burdens.
