Prom night especially dangerous on the road

The combination of young, inexperienced drivers, a multitude of distractions, and the possibility of impairing substances always make for more dangerous roads. Prom night, an important night in the lives of many teens throughout the country, can be especially deadly, as it combines these factors heavily.

On Sunday, May 15, a New Jersey prom night ended in tragedy for two teenage girls, and left two more in critical condition. A 17-year-old girl was driving on State Highway 49 in Morris River Township at around 3:45 a.m., when her vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. The driver was killed instantly, and another passenger was later pronounced dead while being treated for her injuries. Two more passengers were treated for injuries and stabilized. The passengers in the vehicle were all very young, sophomores and juniors in high school.

Sadly, tragedies like this one are statistically likely to become the heartbreak of their communities the morning after a prom night. Teenage drivers are confronted with many choices that can lead to impaired or distracted driving on prom night, whether that be romantic situations, opportunities to consume drugs and alcohol, or simply drowsy driving at some exceptionally late hour.

Car accidents can happen any day or night of the year, but there are especially high concerns on prom night. While it may go in one ear and out the other, taking time to try to instill responsible behavior in teenagers of driving age is still an important step by parents, teachers and other authority figures they may respect. Those who suffer losses or injuries from a car accident may find that an experienced attorney can help protect their rights and dignity as they pursue fair compensation.
