Speeding driver charged with 2 counts of vehicular homicide

A driver was arrested and charged in the death of two men after he caused an accident speeding at 106 miles per hour. The accident happened last year in Bayonne along Route 440. The accused 24-year-old man recently pleaded not guilty to two charges of vehicular homicide.

The accident happened last Nov. 3, while the driver was operating a Toyota Camry along Route 440. Two victims, a 24-year-old and a 20-year-old, died in the collision. The two victims were crossing the highway at the time of the crash, going from east to west. They had gotten past the northbound lanes when they were struck in the southbound lanes. One of the victims was the father of a 5-month-old baby boy. The other victim received his diploma from Bayonne High School last year.

The criminal case against the speeding driver was originally being held in Hudson County Superior Court. However, the case has since been moved to Essex County Superior Court as a result of a conflict. In a recent hearing, the accused man pleaded not guilty. Another court hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 19.

When a tragic roadway fatality occurs, police will try to determine who may have been at fault in the crash. Then they will attempt to prove that the at-fault party was guilty of criminal wrongdoing in court. The evidence produced in criminal court can then be used by family members in civil court, should they choose to pursue a wrongful death claim regarding the accident. An experienced New Jersey personal injury attorney can help victims and family members seek needed compensation.
