Slip-and-fall accidents and slippery floor surfaces

Especially in a state like New Jersey, bad weather leads to more slip-and-fall accidents. Yet slip-and fall mishaps don’t only occur outdoors. Many occur in businesses where people are shopping or dining.

A Claims Journal article discusses how such accidents often occur due to the slipperiness of the floor surface. Unfortunately, many businesses fail to take floor surfaces into account when attempting to prevent slip-and-fall accidents from happening.

Slip-and-fall accidents are common

An executive at CNA Commercial, an insurance and risk management service, emphasized that slip-and-fall accidents occur at all locations. This executive spoke of a CNA study showing that approximately half of all floor surfaces do not create enough friction to meet American National Standards Institute’s minimum safety standards.

“The CNA data uncovered that slip-and-fall claims overtime occur with more frequency than severity, and continue to pose challenges for businesses,” this executive stated. This underscores the need for more attention towards floor surfaces. Manufacturers of floor surfaces should conduct further testing. Also, businesses should pay closer attention to floor surfaces and take extra precautions.

We’ve spoken many times about the serious nature of slip-and-fall injuries. A broken hip, brain contusion or injury to the back could result in a lifetime of disability. Even just being away from the job for a few weeks due to injuries can result in thousands of dollars in wage loss. If the job requires some physical activity (such as warehouse work or waitressing), an injury could mean the end of a career.

Attorneys who try slip-and-fall injury cases regularly know how to hold all responsible parties accountable. They can investigate the circumstances of a fall, and determine whether legal action is in order.
